PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve drivability, and to improve exhaust emissions, by supplying required fuel, when returning from fuel cut operation, when an air-fuel ratio sensor does not reach the active temperature. Ž
SOLUTION: This control device of an internal combustion engine performs the fuel cut operation by stopping fuel supply to the internal combustion engine when decelerating a vehicle. When the air-fuel ratio sensor does not become an active state when returning to ordinary operation from the fuel cut operation, and when its return is a forced return with output of an acceleration request as an opportunity, fuel injection is set as synchronous injection performed in an intake stroke. While, when the air-fuel ratio sensor does not become the active state, and when its return is a natural return with reduction in an engine speed up to a predetermined value or less as an opportunity, the fuel injection is set as asynchronous injection performed before the intake stroke.
