Cell proliferation efficiency is improved by controlling the formation of cell aggregates in a culture container and/or by controlling the disintegration of the aggregates. Cells in a culture container can be counted, regardless of the cell density, without opening a culture system. Cells are cultured by applying an external force to a culture container so as to control at least one of the formation of cell aggregates in the culture container and the disintegration of the aggregates. The external force is applied to the culture container by pressing a stirrer at a definite press rate to the top face of the horizontally placed culture container and then horizontally moving the same at a definite speed. Thus, at least one of the formation of cell aggregates in the culture container and the disintegration of the aggregates is controlled. A method for counting subject matters to be counted in a liquid contained in a sealed container, which comprises regulating at least a part of the thickness of the container, using at least a part of the thus regulated range as the measurement range, and counting the subject matters to be counted in the measurement range.
