<PICT:0673305/III/1> An apparatus for the synthesis of ammonia from a mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen comprises an electric heating element (see Group XI] disposed in a tube 4 in a casing 5 which contains a heat exchanger 1 and a chamber 2 in which is located a catalyst and in which the synthesis takes place. The gas mixture is introduced at 6 and enters the exchanger 1 where it is heated by the outgoing gases. From the exchanger 1 it passes up the tube 4 and down a tube 3 the purpose of which is to maintain the catalyst temperature constant. The gases then contract the catalyst in the chamber 2 and leave the apparatus via the heat exchanger. The purpose of the electric heating element is to provide the energy to supply fresh catalyst material by reduction, and also to facilitate starting up of the apparatus when cold. Part of the gas mixture may be introduced at 7 to be pre-heated, and additionally or alternatively the mixture may enter at 8 and byepass the exchanger 1. Specification 633,284, [Group XI], is referred to. |
