The present invention relates to the use of triterpenes of the formula (I): which are inhibitors of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-&kgr;B for use in the treatment of inflammatory diseases and for cancers susceptible to an NF-&kgr;B inhibitor. The present invention also relates to compounds and methods useful to inhibit cell proliferation and for the induction of apoptosis.
