A communication apparatus provided with a transmission-reception processing unit and a protocol processing unit which interprets incoming packets and generates outgoing packets. The transmission-reception processing unit is provided with: an incoming data conversion unit which converts incoming serial data received through a differential serial transmission line from a previous stage communication apparatus into incoming packets and passes the incoming packets to the protocol processing unit; an outgoing data conversion unit which converts outgoing packets generated by the protocol processing unit into outgoing serial data and outputs the outgoing serial data; a bypass path which splits the incoming serial data into divided incoming serial data before the incoming serial data is converted into the incoming packets; and a bypass control unit which selectively outputs either the divided incoming serial data or the outgoing serial data to a subsequent stage communication apparatus through the differential serial transmission line.
