<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original illuminating device and an image reading apparatus for achieving high energy saving by increasing the efficiency of using a light beam emitted from a light source. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An illuminating means is provided with a condensing means for condensing the rays of light emitted from a plurality of light emitting elements as a light source which illuminates the original of an image reading apparatus. In the shape of the condensing means, a section facing the light emitting part of the light emitting element has a convexed cross sectional shape in a sub-scanning direction, while the other section has a concave shape, and the cross-section in a main scanning direction is a long shape.
