PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine operation of a detecting device by reproducing an output signal when detecting liquid ejection failure. SOLUTION: In the liquid ejection failure detecting device 100, a light emission controller 102 controls light emission by a light emitting element 1 according to a light emission control signal 31 having the same pulse width and the same pulse interval as a head control signal 4 controlling ejection of a liquid droplet B. A light receiving part 103 detects second output voltage TP13 obtained by directly receiving a light beam L emitted by the light emitting element 1 by a light receiving element 2 in such a state that the liquid droplet B is not ejected from a nozzle Nn. A detecting operation determination part 105 decides that the liquid ejection failure detecting device 100 normally operates when the second output voltage TP13 synchronizes with the light emission control signal 31, and determines that the liquid ejection failure detecting device 100 malfunctions when the second output voltage TP13 does not synchronize with the light emission control signal 31.
