<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase an EGR effect of an internal combustion engine equipped with a low pressure EGR and accelerating the cost reduction of a device. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine equipped with a supercharger 4 including a compressor 4a disposed in an intake air passage 2a and a turbine 4b disposed in an exhaust gas passage 7a includes a purification catalyst 8 and a particulate filter 9 at a turbine downstream side of the exhaust gas passage 7a in this order. A first recirculation passage 12a from a downstream side of the filter and a second recirculation passage 12b from an upstream side of the filter are formed so as to reach an upstream side of each compressor. Exhaust gas is recirculated through the first recirculation passage at heavy loading and through the second recirculation passage at light loading. An effect of exhaust gas recirculation is improved even at light loading during which a pressure difference between intake air and exhaust gas is small by making exhaust gas flow without passing through the exhaust gas purification filter and eliminating an influence of a pressure loss at light loading. Since it is not necessary to put a catalyst independently from the exhaust gas passage, the cost of the device is reduced. Ž<P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT Ž
