The method involves determining whether speed of braked wheels is larger than a predetermined threshold value. An inclination angle of a road surface is increased when the speed of the wheels is larger than the threshold value, where the inclination angle is measured by a longitudinal acceleration sensor. A braking force of a hand brake is adjusted based on the inclination angle of the road surface, and a determination is made to find whether the hand brake is arranged in an operating condition. An independent claim is also included for a control device comprising a unit for executing a method for operating an automatic hand brake.
