PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve fuel economy by reducing pumping loss while securing output. SOLUTION: This engine with a variable valve gear includes a first intake valve and a second intake valve installed in one cylinder, and a cam phase variable mechanism for varying the phase of a cam which drives the second intake valve. The cam phase variable mechanism is controlled so that, when the engine is run at a load and a rotational speed lower than in the case of maximum output, the phase of the cam which drives the second intake valve is spark-retarded to increase the difference between the opening/closing timings of the first intake valve and the opening/closing timings of the second intake valve over that in the case of maximum output, and when the engine runs at a lower speed and a higher load than in the case of maximum output, the difference between the opening/closing timings of the firs intake valve and the opening/closing timings of the second intake valve is equal to or lower than a maximum output point set value.
