<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a band not used in existent optical amplifiers to be employed for optical transmission so that an amplification band is expanded by using an existent optical amplification medium. <P>SOLUTION: An optical amplifier includes an excitation means for performing excitation so as to generate at least one gain peak in optical amplification medium used for light amplification by stimulated emission through excitation and also includes a gain equalizer for equalizing the gain peak in the optical amplification medium, thereby obtaining a flat gain in a wavelength band in which gain peak values do not appear. To increase the conversion efficiency of optical amplification, a means for equalizing the gain are provided in a distributive or dispersive manner in the longitudinal direction of the optical amplification medium.
