The present invention relates to an equalization method for equalizing an image made up of pixels in which each pixel has a respective intensity level. The equalization method comprises: dividing the image into first regions; grouping in such a way as to form groups of first regions, each group of first regions comprising a respective plurality of adjacent first regions; computing for each group of first regions a corresponding histogram of the levels of intensity of the pixels in said first regions comprised in said group; computing for each group of first regions a corresponding cumulative function of the corresponding histogram; associating to each first region the cumulative function(s) computed for the group(s) comprising said first region; computing for each first region a corresponding first equalization function on the basis of the cumulative function(s) associated to said first region; dividing said image into second regions in such a way that each second region comprises corresponding areas of different corresponding adjacent first regions; and equalizing in each second region the intensity level of the corresponding pixels on the basis of the first equalization functions computed for the corresponding first regions.
