692,994. Emergency supply systems. CUNY, A. July 13, 1949, No. 18524/49. Class 38 (iv). An emergency dynamo-electric machine 1 coupled to a fly-wheel 2 and normally motoring from a supply S immediately takes over supply to a load upon failure of supply S, the failure also causing closure of a switch 8 for energizing a starter motor 7 of a prime-mover 13 which, when running at approximately the same speed as the machine 1 is coupled to, and continues to drive, the machine. In the system shown, coupling is effected by a clutch 4, 11, the two parts of which are engaged after a delay, imposed by a time switch 15, sufficient for the prime-mover to reach the speed of the machine 1. In another system the clutch and time switch are replaced by a freewheel connecton between the fly-wheel and prime-mover. Power for the starter motor may be provided by an exciter 5, the machine 1, a battery charged from the supply S over a rectifier, or by an auxiliary fly-wheel-driven generator normally maintained in rotation by an electric motor. |
