<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an evaluation method measuring the thickness of a lubricant layer existing on the surface of a magnetic tape. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A spacing measuring method is used, for cleaning and removing the lubricant layer existing on the surface of the magnetic tape by using a solvent which does not damage constituent substances of the magnetic tape, causing a transparent body to face the surface of the magnetic tape so as to be in contact with each other, and calculating the spacing between the magnetic tape and the transparent body based on intensity of interference light generated at a facing part between the magnetic tape and the transparent body. The thickness of the lubricant layer is evaluated by the difference, as an index, between spacings of the surface of the magnetic tape and the transparent body before and after the cleaning.
