<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a red coloring composition for obtaining a red color filter having high brightness which elevates visibility of a liquid crystal display unit dispensing with a backlight having high luminance. <P>SOLUTION: The red coloring composition contains a red dye, and a pigment wherein the red dye has a maximum absorption wavelength (λmax) at 560-565 nm, the wavelength exhibiting a transmittance of 50% is within the range of 595-600 nm when the transmittance of the red dye at 550 nm is 1%, the transmittance of 400-550 nm is less than 40%, and the transmittance of 630-700 nm is not less than 94%.
