<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of cutting a cast slab of vertical type continuous casting, a method that is free from occurrence of slipping of a cutting apparatus during the cutting and that is capable of always horizontally cutting the cast slab. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When a cutting apparatus 3 for cutting a cast slab 1 from a vertical continuous casting machine with a cutting torch 5 is at the elevated end, a cast slab clamper 4 is made to perform pre-clamping operation in which the clamper is closed to a position in contact with the cast slab 1, with a braking device 6 in operation. Then, with the braking device 6 released, the cast slab clamper 4 is made to perform a main clamping operation. With the start of this pre-clamping operation, the rising torque of the elevation motor 13 of the cutting apparatus 3 is gradually increased. On and after the release of the braking device 6, the cast slab 1 is cut while constant rising force is imparted to the cutting apparatus 3. Thus, the occurrence of the slipping is prevented.
