PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid the trouble that printing-out is interrupted by an encoder signal error generated because of an encoder life at an unexpected timing, leading to a downtime from generation of the error to replacement of the encoder. SOLUTION: The light amount of a light source is reduced to a detection limit where an output pulse of the optical encoder is missed at a check time point, and a critical light amount is obtained (S105). An integrated use amount of ink at the time is calculated (S106) and stored in pairs in a storage medium. A curve showing a relationship between the critical light amount and the ink integrated use amount is approximated from a history of these amounts stored in pairs at each check time point (S109). An expectancy of how much can be used until the currently obtained critical light amount reaches a light amount of a preliminarily set life is expressed by the integrated amount of ink on the basis of the obtained estimation life function.
