Vacuum apparatus for raising liquids, and in particular milk, comprises a container 1 having a liquid inlet tube 7 and a liquid outlet 2 controlled by a non-return valve 3, and a float 27 connected to a vertical rod 26 which extends into a valve body 21 on top of the apparatus and operates valve means 24, 28 controlling respectively atmosphere and vacuum passages in the valve body leading into the container. Vacuum is applied through a nipple 23 and ports 21 and causes the liquid to be sucked into the container through a stainless steel pipe 12, which has inlet apertures 14 controlled by a float valve 15, flexible hose 15', inlet valve 17 and apertures 8. As the float rises a rubber valve washer 28 closes the vacuum ports 21b and the valve stem 26 opens the atmosphere valve 24.
