The method involves moving a lift cage (3) in a lift shaft including a lift shaft mine opening. Characteristic values are determined for determining testing proper operational capability of a lift under predetermined test conditions. A change of a distance between the lift cage and a fixed measurement point in the lift shaft mine opening is measured using an optical distance measurement device (7) for determining the characteristic values. The values are evaluated using a low-pass filter i.e. finite impulse response filter. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for testing proper operational capability of a lift.
