A heating appliance (10) for elevating a temperature of a food item includes a controller (32) for minimizing arcing experienced by a circuit interrupter when a supply of electric current to a heating element (12a, 12b) is interrupted. The heating appliance includes an electric heating element that generates heat in response to conducting an electric current. A relay (Kl, K2) is to be electrically connected to the electric heating element for controlling a supply of the electric current to the electric heating element. A coil (28) of the relay can be energized to actuate a switching element (30) that is operable to open and close a conductive pathway (24) for selectively conducting the electric current for generating heat. A selective conductor (Dl) is to be electrically connected to the coil (28) for establishing a flyback path (B) that conducts a decaying electric current when the coil of the relay is de-energized. A voltage regulator (D2) can be provided for maintaining a voltage across the coil (28) at a level above a minimum flyback voltage in response to electrical disconnection of the coil of the relay from a DC electric power source (38).
