In the application a method and an apparatus are described for performing elemental analysis of the formation fluid in a down-hole. The present invention proposes carrying out the elemental analysis of the formation fluid in the down-hole using atomic emission spectroscopy. In one embodiment of the invention, a method and an apparatus are provided for performing laser induced breakdown on a formation fluid sample. In another embodiment of the invention a method and an apparatus are provided for performing operations of spectroscopy using the breakdown, induced by electric discharge. Plasma is produced in the fluid under test in the down-hole. Emissions from the plasma are analyzed to determine the elemental composition of the fluid under test. Emissions include but are not limited to the emission in the ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared regions of the spectrum. A spectrometer is provided for the elemental analysis of the fluid in the down-hole. The elemental analysis provides information about the fluid and the formation from which the fluid originated. |
