<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pneumatic caisson having an air tight apparatus between a compressed air floor plate and an intermediate pile directly under road surface lining that allows a combination of a pneumatic caisson method and an open-cutting method, and to provide a method of submerging the pneumatic caisson. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The airtight apparatus including an inner peripheral section slidably and airtightly mounted to the peripheral surface of the intermediate pile, and an outer peripheral section airtightly fixed to the compressed air floor plate of the pneumatic caisson is formed as an annular body with an axis radially movable in a form of half parts split into two airtightly connectable to each other. The method of submerging the pneumatic caisson including the airtight apparatus includes steps for constructing the compressed air floor plate by taking in each previously-driven intermediate pile which is inserted through with a clearance around it at a primary excavated surface excavated directly under the road surface lining; holding each intermediate pile from both sides with the half parts split into two to connect each other on the upper face of the compressed air floor plate; and mounting the airtight apparatus airtightly and slidably in the axial direction of the intermediate pile and movably in the radial direction, thereby submerging the pneumatic caisson airtightly between the compressed air floor plate and the intermediate pile.
