PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller of an automatic transmission capable of reducing the load of an engine by restoring a state of a friction material in a hydraulic friction engagement device of the automatic transmission, and improving the fuel consumption. SOLUTION: When determining that a vehicle is in a braked state (YES in Step S11), and a start determining time A elapses (YES in Step S14), a CPU changes over an operating state of a B1 brake to an engaged state and a released state (step S22 and step S24). When determining that the number of engagement times does not reach the number B of end determination times (NO in Step S26), it repeats an operating condition switching control (Step S22 to Step S26).
