<p>A misfire due to a change in the cetane number of fuel is suppressed. An internal combustion engine comprises a cetane number detecting means (90) for detecting the cetane number of fuel, a swirl ratio changing means (17) for changing the swirl ratio in a cylinder, and a swirl ratio control means (90) which, when the cetane number detected by the cetane number detecting means (90) is lower than a reference value, reduces the swirl ratio to a level lower than the swirl ratio when the cetane number is higher than the reference value. Diffusion of the fuel and decrease of the temperature in the cylinder are suppressed by reducing the swirl ratio.</p> |
