PROCESS AND APPARATUS FOR PRODUCING COMPOSITE MATERIAL

A process for efficiently producing a composite material comprising a base and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) deposited on the surface thereof, on the basis of a CVD method.  The process comprises: feeding a CNT-supporting base (P) and a carbon-source vapor (V) to the heatable chamber of a cylinder (10), the cylinder (10) having been disposed obliquely so that the cylinder can be rotated on the major axis and one end (10a) of the major axis is located above; and yielding CNTs on the surface of the base.  The positions of a CNT-supporting-base introduction part (30) and a carbon-source-vapor supply part (40) are determined so that the CNT-supporting base comes into contact with the carbon-source vapor in a reaction zone (12) disposed in at least some of an upstream-side region within the chamber.  Protrusions (20) have been disposed on the inner circumferential wall of the chamber.  Due to this, by rotating the cylinder, the CNT-supporting base is moved from the upstream side to the downstream side of the cylinder while repeatedly being caught in and lifted up with the protrusions and falling.
