PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image capturing apparatus that facilitates accelerating a shutter speed, even when a vertical position and a horizontal position are switched, and to provide a method of controlling the image capturing apparatus. SOLUTION: A subject image is converted into image data by image sensors and output (timing t2) and when a release button 21 is fully depressed (timing t3), according to whether image data output area is vertical or horizontal, image sensor 221 are sequentially reset in a vertical direction or a horizontal direction (timing t4). According to whether the image data output area is vertical or horizontal, the image sensors 221 are light-shielded sequentially in the vertical direction or horizontal direction (timing t5).
