The present invention relates to a composition for the prevention or treatment of eye diseases, comprising as an active ingredient a compound represented by the following general formula I: IS-(MS)p-(MS)q, wherein S is sialic acid and (MS)p and (MS)q are independent monosaccharide residues. The compound used as an active ingredient in the present invention suppresses the expression of MMP-9 and inflammation-causing cytokines (IL-1ß and TNF-a) on corneal epithelial cells, and suppresses the activity of VEGF-mediated VEGFR-2 on human retinal endothelial cells, thereby ultimately preventing and treating eye diseases such as xerophthalmia, inflammatory eye diseases, eye diseases caused by newly-generated blood vessels and side effects caused by the use of contact lenses. Additionally, the composition of the present invention does not have cell toxicity and does not cause skin problems, and thus can be safely used in pharmaceutical, nutraceutical or food compositions. Further, the composition of the present invention can be used as a cleanser to treat non-bacterial inflammations caused by the use of contact lenses, and as a lubricant to facilitate ocular lubrication.
