The method involves providing one of a set of modified trim-Y-axis intercepts, active regulating value-Y- axis intercepts, de-active regulating value-Y-axis intercepts as a representative of a value of respective partial regression lines when a throttle valve pressure ratio is greater than 1. Failure of an intake system (1) is identified based on trim value pitch, trim-Y-axis intercept, active regulating value pitch, active regulating value-Y-axis intercept, de-active regulating value pitch, de-active regulating value-Y-axis intercept and a set of modified Y-axis intercepts. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating an internal-combustion engine, comprising an intake system.
