<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of printing in large quantities at high speed by preventing abnormal temperature rise in one paper non-passing part while maintaining temperature of a heater as high as possible by positioning the heater in a longitudinal direction relative to an image forming apparatus body. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus, the fixing device 14 includes: a fixing member 16 equipped with a heating means; a pressure member 15 made to press-contact with the fixing member to form a fixing nip; and a fixing device body holding the heating means and the pressure member, and is constituted so that recording material conveyed from the image forming apparatus body 100A while carrying an unfixed image is made to pass through the fixing nip, thereby fixing the unfixed image on the recording material as a permanent image. The heating means is installed to freely move in a direction orthogonal to a recording material conveying direction relative to the fixing device body, and the position of the heating means in the direction orthogonal to the recording material conveying direction is set relative to the image forming apparatus body when the fixing device is attached to the image forming apparatus body.
