Provided is method for identifying the group of multilayer optical discs which have the structures capable of reproducing recorded information using optical beams having the same wavelength and are classified into a plurality of groups. In the method, a step (A) of measuring the distance between a first information layer among a plurality of information layers included in the multilayer optical disc and a second information layer adjacent to the first information layer or the distance between the first information layer and the surface of the optical disc is performed. Then, a step (B) of identifying the group to which the multilayer optical disc belongs based on the distance is performed.
