<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably and uniformly charge a surface of an image carrier by stabilizing positional relationship between a charging member and the image carrier in a discharging region and by increasing the discharging region for the charging member which discharges the image carrier when the surface of the image carrier is charged by means of a contact type charging device using a flexible and cylindrical charging member which is rotated in contact with the surface of the image carrier. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus is disclosed in which the surface of the image carrier is charged by means of the contact type charging device 120 using the flexible and cylindrical charging member 121 which is rotated in contact with the surface of the rotationally driven image carrier 10. In the image forming apparatus, a non-deformable supporting member 122 supporting the charging member in such a way that the charging member is brought into contact with the surface of the image carrier is provided on an inner periphery side of the charging member, and the whole discharging region of the charging member that discharges the image carrier is supported in contact with the supporting member.
