<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correct a density variation of original image data when the flotation or inclination of an original at a read position is changed in a see-through type image reader. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A reference sheet 7 which is wider than an original document D and has constant density is arranged between an original retainer 5 and contact glass 11. The reference sheet 7 is fixed to the original retainer 5 at an end in the upstream side in the original document transfer directional. The reference sheet 7 is curled in conformity with the original document D in a curling state. When the original document D is not in a read area, the reference sheet 7 is not curled to be on the contact glass 11. According to the difference between the read density of the reference sheet 7 when the original document D is not in the read area and the read density of the reference sheet 7 during the read of the original document D, the density of read original image data is corrected to a correct density variation based on the change of the flotation or inclination of the original document D at the read position.
