<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an aqueous dispersion of a carboxy alkyl cellulose (derivative) containing no additive such as a surfactant, a plasticizer, etc., being impurities. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The method for producing an aqueous dispersion of a carboxy alkyl cellulose (derivative) includes filtering a dispersion obtained by dispersing a carboxy alkyl cellulose (derivative) (A) into a mixed solvent of a water-soluble organic solvent (B) and water by an ultrafiltration membrane so as to remove the solvent (B) and to give the aqueous dispersion of a carboxy alkyl cellulose (derivative) having the average particle diameter of the cellulose (derivative) (A) of 1-500 μm.
