PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To compatibly achieve response properties and retention properties of an engine compression ratio by a movable piston. SOLUTION: A variable compression ratio mechanism 20 changes an engine compression ratio as the movable piston 23 moves in the axial direction of a cylinder 21. Under a high compression ratio condition where the movable piston 23 is abutted on a stopper 45 on a high compression ratio side, the peak value Fin of input load to a low compression ratio side acting on the movable piston 23 from the variable compression ratio mechanism 20 side, is small in light load and is large in high load as compared with energizing load Fspr to a high compression ratio side by an energizing spring 44. In a high compression ratio low load, the movable piston 23 is pressed against the stopper through an energizing load Fspr to the high compression ratio side exceeding the peak value Fin of input load. In quick acceleration, the peak value Fin of an input load to the low compression ratio side exceeds the energizing load Fspr as load increases, the movable piston 23 is pushed to the low compression ratio side.
