<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To instantly reduce a compression ratio when an engine is accelerated without requiring an active control. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This multi-link variable compression ratio device for the internal combustion engine includes a multi-link variable compression ratio mechanism, and the compression ratio is set by the rotating position of a control shaft 18. In the device, a main actuator 30 using an electric motor 31 is coupled through first and second links 61, 62. A hydraulic piston mechanism 50 is coupled through a third link 65 so as to restrict the degree of freedom of the links 61, 62. A first and second oil pressure ports 55, 56 of the hydraulic piston mechanism 50 are opened and closed by a piston 52 itself, and are connected to each other through a communication passage 57. When an engine load is increased with the piston 52 located on the side of a high compression ratio (in an upper limit position), the piston 52 is slightly lowered by a combustion load, the first oil pressure port 55 is opened to instantly lower the piston 52, and the compression ratio is reduced.
