A method for the mass spectrometric identification of microorganisms in a sample (e.g. a mixed culture) comprises comparing a mass spectrum from the sample MS with reference mass spectra in a database DB, calculating the similarity between the sample spectrum and the reference spectra S21, selecting the set of reference spectra REFsmost similar to the sample spectrum S22 and investigating that set for the presence of reference spectra from different species such that if spectra from different species are present a combination spectrum CS is produced S23 and compared to the sample spectrum, the presence of reference spectra from a given microorganism in the combination spectrum being indicative S24 of the presence of that microorganism in the sample. Further inventions concern the comparison of sample and hypothetical combination spectra and a method wherein at least one reference spectrum is subtracted from the sample spectrum. |
