The control method has the airbag restraint (7) controlled in dependence on the actual seating position of the passenger (6), with detection of the seating position at the beginning of the braking phase and the braking inertia, for calculation of the position displacement of the passenger. The airbag restraint is controlled in dependence on the calculated position displacement at the detected impact time point. An independent claim for a control device for an airbag restraint for an automobile passenger is also included.
