<p>Provided is a liquid crystal display device in which an excellent display characteristic can be obtained because of an excellent wettability of an oriented film material and no oriented film failures, even if the liquid crystal device is small and thin, uses advanced highly fine patterns, and has a multi-gap structure. The liquid crystal display device comprises a first substrate, a liquid crystal layer, and a second substrate provided in this order, a reflective display region, and a transmission display region. The first and second substrates have insulating films on their principal surfaces on the liquid crystal layer side. The insulating films have recessed portions on both the first and second substrates in the transmission display region, the recessed portions making the thickness of the liquid crystal layer larger when viewing from a normal line direction with respect to each substrate surface. The first and second substrates also include oriented films formed on the surfaces contacting the liquid crystal layer and covering the surfaces including the recessed portions.</p> |
