Management and control of assets in a business system is enabled through tags. Assets include virtual machines, hardware, personnel, and other assets. System tags are automatically determined and associated with assets. System determines name and version of an operating system running on a virtual machine and associates an appropriate system tag. Virtual tags and dynamic tags contain instructions on determining tag value associated with assets. Management tags entered by user indicate asset information based on individual knowledge. Tags are combined via Boolean algebra Tag-Based Query Language (TQL) enables universal search based on associated tags (TQL) enables access control over assets and enforcement of policies. |
