PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image playback apparatus and method that can retrieve and plays back an image file based upon time and date information at high speed. SOLUTION: The image playback apparatus, which is capable of playing back images recorded in a recording medium, acquires creation time and date and modification time and date which are time stamps of the image file, compares the acquired creation and modification times and dates, registers the matching time and date as the time and date management information of the image file when the creation time and date and the modification time and date match, or registers the older of the two times and dates as the time and date management information of the image file when they do not match.
