<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rod integrator in which the number of speckle patterns is reduced without impairing the original functions of the rod integrator, and also to provide a projection apparatus equipped with the rod integrator. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The rod integrator 10 is constituted by arraying a rotary rod 11 and a fixed rod 12 in this order from the side of a light source. As a result, many speckle patterns are superposed on one another and averaged to reduce the number of speckles in a fixed period of time by rotating the rotary rod 11. When the light is emitted through the fixed rod 12, the light having a shape, which is matched with that of a video display element, and a uniform light intensity distribution is emitted.
