To characterize or test a sensor (16) of a driver assistance system (14), a test vehicle (12) is positioned on a testing ground (10) fitted with at least one test body (20). A positioning robot (24) is prepared for the test body and the test vehicle is brought into place. The test body is moved into a defined position on the testing ground by the robot in relation to the test vehicle. The control signals for the robot and/or trigger signals for the test vehicle come from a control (28) with a transmitter (30,32). The control can be integrated into the robot, which is fitted with a navigation system (40).
