PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To operate an internal combustion engine with ignition at more appropriate ignition timing at the predetermined changes, that is, the change of the open/close timing of the air intake valve and the change of a recirculation rate that is a ratio of recirculation amount to the sum of the recirculation amount of the exhaust gas recirculated into the intake air by an exhaust gas recirculator and the amount of the intake air of the internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: When both of the open/close timing TV of the air intake valve and an EGR rate Re change, a first correction amount TFv is set by correcting a first temporary correction amount TFvtmp corresponding to a target open/close timing TV* based on a rate of changeα(S170, S180) and a second correction amount TFe is set by correcting a second temporary correction amount TFetmp corresponding to a target EGR rate Re* based on a rate of changeβ(S240, S250). A target ignition timing TF* is set by correcting a basic ignition timing TFbase by the first and second correction amounts TFv and TFe thus set (S260).
