PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrial production method of a hydroxy group substitution product. SOLUTION: The hydroxy group substitution product can be produced by reacting an alcohol with sulfuryl fluoride (SO<SB>2</SB>F<SB>2</SB>) in the presence of an organic base and a nucleophilic agent (X<SP>-</SP>). This is an industrial method using an inexpensive agent for a large-scale use, easily carrying out operations and refining, and generating little waste. The method can be suitably applied to the production of an optically active hydroxy group substitution product, particularly an optically activeα-hydroxy group substitution ester and an optically active 4-hydroxy group substitution proline.
