A light wavelength converting member (58) is transparently provided in a light emitting module (40), and the light wavelength converting member converts the wavelength of light emitted from a semiconductor light emitting element (52) and outputs the light from a light outputting surface (58b). A low refractive index layer (60) is formed of a material having a refractive index lower than that of the light wavelength converting member (58) and is provided in contact with the light outputting surface (58b) of the light wavelength converting member (58). An intermediate member (62) is formed of a material having a refractive index lower than that of the light wavelength converting member (58), and is provided in contact with both the light outputting surface (52a) of the semiconductor light emitting element (52) and the light incoming surface (58a) of the light wavelength converting member (58). The intermediate member (62) is provided such that the refractive index thereof is lower than that of the low refractive index layer (60). Recesses and projections are formed on both of the surfaces in contact with each other, i.e., the light outputting surface (52a) of the semiconductor light emitting element (52) and the light incoming surface (62a) of the intermediate member (62).
