The appliance has light guides (101, 102) for transmitting heat information to a sensor element (103) e.g. infrared sensor element. One of the light guides (101) has a fiber core (104) e.g. cable harness, for transmitting the heat information. The other light guide has a fiber core (107) that is insulated from the former fiber core. The latter fiber core transmits an interference signal that is generated based on the heat information. An optical lock is provided for the respective fiber core. The former fiber core detects heat radiation of a heat source. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining temperature of components of a cooking pan.
