The method involves providing additional information related to a brake assembly of a motor vehicle to a brake assistance system, where brake assistance adapts to triggering characteristic of the brake assembly independent of the information. The additional information is read automatically after installation of a controller in the vehicle, where the additional information is a controlling point of a brake booster (2) or rigidity of the brake assembly. Brake pressure and/or a pressure gradient are measured and converted into a braking force. The additional information includes volume of a master brake cylinder and/or stroke and/or diameter of a brake piston of the master brake cylinder and/or volume of a brake and/or a braking force reinforcement of the brake booster. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a brake assistance system engaged into a brake application of a motor vehicle.
