<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device for stabilizing the luminance of an image to be displayed, as quickly as possible. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image display device includes: a driving control unit configured to makes a light source emit light for image formation in sequence by supplying to the light source a current having intensity corresponding to an image signal in sequence when a scanning position is within an effective scanning range and to makes the light source emit light for inspection when the scanning position is at a predetermined position outside the effective scanning range; and an optical detection unit configured to detect the intensity of the light emitted by the light source. The driving control unit includes: a detecting means for increasing or decreasing the current supplied to the light source in second set value units after supplying a current having a preset first set value to the light source and making the light source emit the light for inspection, for decreasing or increasing the current supplied to the light source in third set value units smaller than the second set value units and for detecting it by the optical detection unit when the intensity of the light for inspection detected by the optical detection unit exceeds a predetermined threshold; and an adjusting means for adjusting the current supplied to the light source according to the image signal based upon the current value detected by the detecting means.
