<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a user interface for a device which supports a complicated user interactive task while providing a simple command interface. <P>SOLUTION: A disclosed processing device, including an on-screen user interface display, incorporates a means for generating a display of a plurality of hierarchically ordered menus (500). The menus include a current menu (555) and a preceding parent menu (535, 540, 545, 550) showing a selection path (545, 555) from the parent menu to the current menu. Also a menu selection item (555) within the hierarchical menu display provides a user (a) a display of control information for the device, (b) a function selection capability and (c) control parameter data entry capability. They have a master-slave relationship in the sequence of (a), (b) and (c).
