<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sliding bearing capable of smoothly supporting a shaft and performing smoother linear motion and rotation of the shaft, and a bearing mechanism equipped with the bearing. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The sliding bearing 1 for a steering column 1 includes a bearing body 2, a flat surface 4 integrally formed on an inner peripheral surface 3 of the bearing body 2, a slit 7 extending from one end surface 5 of the bearing body 2 to a part in front of the other end surface 6 of the bearing body 2, a slit 8 extending from the other end surface 6 of the bearing body 2 to a part in front of the one end surface 5 of the bearing body 2, grooves 10 formed on an outer peripheral surface 9 of the bearing body 2, and elastic rings projecting from the outer peripheral surface 9 of the bearing body 2 and suitable for the respective grooves 10 so as to contract the diameter of the bearing body 2.
